Red Rock State Park History and Background

The area of land that comprises what we know today to be part of Red Rock State Park has a long and colorful history. A significant portion of what is now Red Rock State Park was once part of the Smoke Trail Ranch, a vacation home purchased in 1941 by the wealthy couple, Helen and Jack Frye (who was President of Trans World Airlines at the time). In the 1970s the property passed into the hands of a developer who intended to build an elaborate resort facility on the land. However, due to a breakdown in funding the project never got off the ground, and fortunately, during the 1980s, the State of Arizona was able to negotiate a complex and elaborate land-swap deal to procure the ownership rights to this lovely acreage. Finally, in the fall of 1991 Red Rock State Park was dedicated and opened to the public, ensuring that all people may enjoy its many wonders for generations to come.
