Big E Steakhouse & Saloon – Tusayan Restaurant

Big E Steakhouse & Saloon is named for its founder and owner, Elling “Big E” Halvorson. Halvorson first came to the Grand Canyon area in 1963, when he found work constructing the massive pipeline that runs water from the interior of the Inner Gorge to the top of the South Rim. He never left the region, and today still runs this establishment well-known for its large portions and welcoming Western décor.

Big E Steakhouse Ambiance

Twin statues of cowboys-on-horseback flank the entrance to this wood-and-stone, lodge-like dining hall. As if the spectacular scenery just outside the front door could ever let you forget, the décor inside reminds you that you are dining in the heart of the old Southwest.

The dining room is warmly lit by rustic chandeliers, while the walls are designed to resemble saloon storefronts of the Wild West yesteryears. A variety of animal skins, heads, and skeletons adorn all corners of the establishment. A monumental movie screen anchors the front section of the restaurant, usually showing a variety of programs about the natural wonders of the Grand Canyon area.

The seating area features wooden tables and chairs, while the nearby bar evokes a classic American saloon. Guests may order the complete menu from the bar. Patio seating is also available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Big E Steakhouse Food

Big E Steakhouse and Saloon features a diverse menu, including a wide selection of lunch specials, kids-specific items, and specialty cocktails. The lunch special here changes daily, so make certain to check Big E’s website for the latest deal. Children 12 and under have their choice of favorites like chicken tenders, mac & cheese, and a burger. Each kids’ item comes with a choice of two sides.

The daily menu at Big E is expansive. Start your meal off with a hearty appetizer or soup—or even a salad, if you are in the mood. The real attractions here, of course, are the steaks. Standout items include such favorites as the boneless ribeye, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and the “Showstopper” T-Bone.

However, despite its name, Big E Steakhouse is not just for the steak-lover. Other noteworthy meals include cheese-stuffed jumbo ravioli, pan-seared Blue Claw crab cakes, and stuffed bell peppers. Likewise, the dessert offerings are a staple of the Big E dining experience. These selections are rotated daily. They make for a consistently enjoyable way to conclude a meal here.

The Saloon serves an assortment of drinks. Whether you are in the mood for a glass of white wine, or looking to sample one of the region’s most popular craft beers, you will find it here. If you are interested in a truly unique beverage experience, consider one of Big E’s “specialty drinks.” These brightly colored cocktails are served in giant glasses shaped like cowboy boots, and they feature memorable names like the “Pesos Bill” and the “Toe Tapper.”
